ART THAT CONNECTS COMMUNITY AND PLACE

NITSUA brought Marymount Primary School's Marian Centre to life with an impressive 10m-high mural of Mary. Set against the iconic Burleigh Headland, the artwork weaves together local symbolism, from rolling waves to the original Catholic Parish Church, creating a landscape students and staff instantly recognise and feel proud of.

Austin NITSUA has been surfing the world-famous right-hand point break since his teens, which grounds the sacred imagery in a place both he & the school community truly value.

The project was especially meaningful for NITSUA’s creative assistant, Monique, who returned to her first Gold Coast primary school and church more than 30 years later, reuniting with her Grade 4 teacher. A few weeks after the mural’s completion, Austin was recognised by students while sailing his Hobie Cat in Tallebudgera Creek: “Hey! Aren’t you the Marymount mural artist?!”

This mural is a perfect example of how NITSUA transforms blank walls into storytelling pieces that connect community, place, and purpose, leaving a lasting impression on all who experience it. It stands as a striking reflection of faith, local identity, and the power of art in educational spaces.
